Artist Biography
Dan Baker is an American artist based in Seoul whose paintings explore the relationship between thought, feeling, and behavior. Trained in studio art and philosophy, Baker spent several years teaching cultural theory and working in Korean media before returning to a sustained studio practice.
His paintings combine poured pigment, charcoal drawing, and transparent layers of color. Beginning without a predetermined image, Baker works between intuition and structure, allowing figurative forms to emerge gradually from abstract fields of movement and atmosphere.
Through his ongoing Emergence and Inner Ecology bodies of work, Baker examines the ways internal experience is observed, interpreted, and integrated through the body.
Dan Baker는 서울을 기반으로 활동하는 미국인 작가로, 생각과 감정, 행동 사이의 관계를 회화를 통해 탐구한다. 스튜디오 아트와 철학을 공부한 그는 한국에서 문화 이론을 가르치 고 미디어 분야에서 활동한 후 본격적인 작업 활동으로 돌아왔다.
그의 회화는 흘려 부은 안료와 목탄 드로잉, 투명한 색의 층을 결합한다. 미리 정해진 이미지 없이 시작하여 직관과 구조 사이를 오가며 작업하고, 추상적인 움직임과 분위기의 장 안에서 인체의 형상이 서서히 드러나도록 한다.
현재 진행 중인 Emergence와 Inner Ecology 작업을 통해 Baker는 내면의 경험이 어떻게 관찰되고 해석되며 신체를 통해 통합되는지를 탐구한다.
Artist Statement
My paintings begin with an intuitive material event. Pigment is poured and moved across the surface before a fixed image or composition has been determined. I treat this initial field as something to observe rather than something to correct.
Through drawing, staining, obscuring, and clarification, figurative forms gradually emerge from structures already present within the painting. The process moves repeatedly between intuition and structure, clarity and ambiguity, control and response.
I am interested in the space between internal experience and outward action: how feeling becomes interpretation, how interpretation influences behavior, and how these systems continually reshape one another. Rather than resolving that complexity into a fixed meaning, the paintings leave space for viewers to encounter their own associations and inner dialogue.
나의 회화는 직관적인 물질적 사건에서 시작된다. 미리 정해진 이미지나 구도 없이 안료를 화면 위에 붓고 움직이며, 이렇게 형성된 최초의 장을 수정해야 할 대상으로 보기보다 관찰하고 반응해야 할 대상으로 바라본다.
드로잉과 스테이닝, 흐리기와 선명하게 하기의 반복을 통해 화면 안에 이미 존재하는 구조에서 인체의 형상이 서서히 드러난다. 이 과정은 직관과 구조, 선명함과 모호함, 통제와 반응 사이를 지속적으로 오간다.
나는 내면의 경험과 외부의 행동 사이에 존재하는 관계에 관심이 있다. 감정이 어떻게 해석되고, 그 해석이 어떻게 행동에 영향을 미치며, 이 요소들이 다시 서로를 변화시키는지를 탐구한다. 회화는 이러한 복잡성을 하나의 고정된 의미로 해결하기보다, 관람자가 자신의 연상과 내면의 대화를 마주할 수 있는 공간을 남겨둔다.
